The country I decided to research was Jamaica it amazes me how a place where tourist visit so often can have poverty issues. But reality is poverty exist all over the world. Only four of the seven dimensions of deprivation targeted by global study, the MICS collected data on only four of them. The four are sanitation, water, education, and health. Out of the four studied the major concern was health with sanitation being the least. Due to Jamaica location it is vulnerable to global warming events such as, sea rising, rain storms, hurricanes etc. I read in the study on the website they believe if this study is repeated every 2-3 years the numbers in deprivation in children would rise. Health in children has been on decline in Jamaica for century's Jamaican children face significant challenges in access to and quality of health care and proper early stimulation. Under-five mortality rates (31 per 1,000 live births, 2009) and infant mortality rates (26 per 1,000 live births, 2009) have remained high. Disabilities among children are an estimated 10 per cent. A reported 25 per cent of adolescents aged 15-19 years are overweight or obese, while 37 per cent of boys and 11 per cent of girls aged 10-15 years consume alcohol. Children education in Jamaica may not be the best but it is one of the best things they have going on for the children in that country. Education there starts when the child is 2 years of age is called the infant school. I researched but was not able to fine any facilites that accpeted them before the age of 2. In Jamaica most parents considered this a waste of money and believed that it was too early for their children to learn. But enrollment continues to grow and it shows the difference in a child that attend an early childhood program compared to those who don't. The ones who do are more social and well behaved the others shows lack of attention and a variety of behavior problems. In 2014 Jamaica won the award for the best drinking water by tourist. But getting clean water for the citizens of Jamaica still seems to be a huge problem. The country depend on water supply from different volunteer organizations. So bottled water is still recommended while vacationing there. This is a place I really want to see, but after researching this I just do not want to see the glitz and glam but I want to see what its like in the areas that is experiencing poverty.
The organization I decided to go with was Zero to three I chose this organization because the name stuck out to me, and I thought it was a interesting age range to focus on. I decided to explore their policy on supporting babies through quality rating and improvement systems. This system is known statewide. This system allows practices to be put in play that make sure the correct tools are use when promoting learning in our toddlers throughout the united states. The policy state the the QRIS is a life document meaning it can me altered with approval to fit the needs of the program. This system also implement family cooperation, physical play and nutrition. Teachers that teach children with special needs follow the same QRIS system with slight modification. https://youtu.be/jw-9tRfUUT8 One interested trend on the website was knowing the right time to start disciplining your child, a mother that was in the program stated that her 17 month daughter had begun to swing on her when she got angry like when things did not go her way. The program states that this gesture is no different from a child raising its hands when they want to be picked up. It also states to correct this action its important to have a firm tone but not to be angry. Children do not know how to fully express themselves so this should not be taking as a form of disrespect, but as a way to express their feelings. As I got myself familiar with the website I came across a project the site offers called text4babies, its a program zero to three offers to parents to receive text notifications on information pertaining to important health and safety information. I thought this was very unique and this organization is dedicated to children focusing closely on this specific age range. I play on exploring and learning more of what hey have to offer. I included the link to the presentation if anyone would like to explore.
Listening to the podcast was very interesting to me, I believe it may be the first one I ever listened to. I found it very interesting to listen Michael Kalinowski interview George Forman. He spoke on discrimination play which me means a child choosing one that over another to do difficulty. We would never know all ways in which a child learns because it clear that a child can learn something new on mistake. George Forman spoke on how the child in a sense had become bored with the object and decided to give it rest and he discovered it was able to stand on its own. The child facial expression explained that this was a wow experience for him. The child has mistakenly learned something new. This experience took play to another state of mind for this child. Seeing what the log could do on its own gave new dimension to what the child was trying to do. He also speaks on the facial expression how he knew that facial expression meant something, a child reaction can say a million words. In most situations, there is normally two ways to do things.
I chose the to study the site of zerotothree.org they mission statement states they envision a society that has the knowledge and will to support all infants and toddlers in reaching their full potential. This is exactly what is needed. Having a team dedicated to children from birth is key to helping children succeed. Children are so impressionable during this stage it is much needed to have a system in play that supports the adults that are in contact with the children during this time. I have learned in this program how people are so uneducated on how children learn and people be amazed on how a smart a child really is. This comes from being surrounded by the right individuals. This organization cover a variety of areas including parenting, policy & advocacy, early learning, and early development wellbeing. I look forward to finding more information about this organization so I started with the history, they launched in 1977 as the National Center for Clinical Infant Programs. During this time, they have employed over a 160 people who have contributed to this organization being successful. They believe by bring together leaders in the field of medicine, mental health, and social science it would build a formidable reputation and put quality standards on the early childhood community. |
